County Final:
Nine years ago, Bruree graced the field in Fitzgerald Park, Kilmallock to compete against Knockainey in a Premier Intermediate County Final. This was the last time before Saturday that Bruree’s first-string hurling team had played a County Final fixture. The stage was set on Saturday October 26th, for such an occasion as Mick Neville Park was thronged with supporters from Bruree and Croagh Kilfinney.  Bruree’s form had improved and improved as the year went on overcoming windswept battles with Pallasgreen, St. Kieran’s and beating group leaders Murroe Bhoer in Fedamore to emerge successful to a County Quarter Final. Bruree showed resilience beating the Knockainey in Bruff and a Groundhog Day semi-final fixture against Murroe Boher in Fedamore emerging victorious by three.
Croagh’s path to the final was like Bruree’s only losing one group game. Bruree’s draw with Mungret St. Paul’s in game one meant that Croagh took the second spot in the group, ahead of Bruree in second place. This meant they would face Cappamore and eventually Feoghnagh Castlemahon in a semi-final winning easily in both. Bruree and Croagh have not been historical rivals, the two clubs, however in the last three years had faced each other three times in championship, developing a healthy rivalry.
Bruree were quick out of the traps, going 0-5 to 0-2 up after ten minutes with a flurry of scores and great defending from our full and half back lines. After several frees Croagh were able to edge up to Bruree narrowing the gap to 0-8 to 0-7 with 20 minutes played. Bruree ended the half with 0-10 to Croagh’s 0-09. One of the highlights of Bruree’s first half was Brian Sexton’s two points from play.
The second half started slowly on the scoring side for both teams with Bruree and Croagh both sitting at 0-11 after ten minutes. During that period Croagh really began to pressurise Bruree’s backs, who did well to concede only one point. William Sexton’s man marking in the full back line was a great contributor to this. Over the next ten minutes Croagh would go on a 0-5 to 0-0 scoring run. As eight more minutes flew by, both teams would also be reduced to a point a piece leaving the score at 0-17 to 0-12. Conor Fawley then stopped the rot with a point. Bruree then won a penalty which was scored by Sam Conolly. This was followed with Bruree scoring two points, this bringing the score to 1-14 to 0-18 in the space of three minutes. Bruree outscoring Croagh 1-1 to 0-01. Alas it was too late, and the final whistle was blown in the 60+7th minute with the match finishing 1-14 to 0-18 to Croagh. While Bruree may have lost the game they fought valiantly and narrowly missed out on victory. All credit to Bruree’s players and management for a great clean game of hurling. Brú Rí Abú.
